Direct Care Staff – Level I – Entry Level
Department: Operations Location: Gladstone. MI
Reports To: Home Manager
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Assist and care for adults with severe mental illness and occurring disorders, performing in gentle, compassionate and evidenced-based manner and operating within the rights of the residents.
Set positive examples for residents at all times.
Adhere to the person centered plans, treatment plans, and behavior plans as written for each resident.
Provide opportunities throughout the day to help residents meet goals. (Examples include teaching groups to follow activity programs and encouraging resident attendance.)
Provide quality of care, a safe and healthy setting free from harm while upholding the rights of all residents.
Create a space of trust and relationship with all residents.
Protect all residents from abuse and/or neglect and immediately reports any occurrence to appropriate authorities.
Maintain and protect the confidentiality of all residents.
Follow and uphold all house guidelines.
Cook meals as necessary for residents based upon food specifications, diets, food exchanges and documentation.
Understand process for food supply and storage.
Transport residents to and attends appointments with residents and advocates and obtains necessary documentation.
Utilize resident funds as applicable to help residents budget and utilizes petty cash effectively.
Complete required documentation before the end of shift, including, but not limited to progress notes, miscellaneous notes, daily support logs, event reports, incident reports, LOA forms, resident inventories, etc.
Assist with supervision of residents doing their laundry and completes facility laundry, as needed.
Coach residents on bedroom cleanliness per house guidelines.
Responsible for cleanliness of home site according to the cleaning chart. Inspection ready at all times.
Must remain awake and immediately accessible in all homes requiring 24/7 care.
Hand off communication to next shift staff.
On-call duties as needed
Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Education & Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED strongly preferred, but not required.
1-2 years of previous experience preferred, but not required.
Ability to work with and care for adults with mental illness and co-occurring disorders.
Ability to performing in a gentle, compassionate and evidenced-based manner, while operating within the rights of the residents.

Within 30 days of hire – successful completion of CPR, First Aid, CPI (NAPPI or Mandatory Training, as applicable), and all modules stipulated by the State of Michigan Licensing Division, Department of Community Health, and Community Mental Health Agencies.
Successfully pass background checks including fingerprinting, physical, drug and alcohol testing, TB screening, employment and personal references.
Follows all guidelines pertinent to the responsibilities of a residential care staff.
Demonstrated ability to communicate in a calm manner.
Ability to take direction well from management level staff.
Must be able to meet time requirements of position.
Must possess a valid Driver’s License and remain eligible insurable under the BSLS insurance coverage policy.
Proficient in speaking, reading and writing the English language.
Physical Job Requirements:
Possess physical stamina required to help care for and assist individuals to move around.
Ability to physically and emotionally work with individuals who possess mental illness and co-occurring disorders during a 12-hour shift.
Ability to assist residents with their daily activities and life.
Ability to cook and prepare meals for residents.
Ability to participate in and/or watch residential activities.
Ability to work in an environment with the potential for exposure to physical aggression from residents exists.
Ability to lift and / or move up to 25 pounds.
Ability to drive and travel to residential appointments and activities.
Ability to travel may be required to visit BSLS facilities.
Ability to speak, read and write the English language.
Work is performed remotely and at home-like setting or community facilities with the potential of exposure to infectious disease. Universal precautions are required to minimize the risk of infections. Work sites may include locations that are not barrier-free. Duties are performed in an environment where there is a potential for physical aggression from residents.
